Are you tired of long car rides turning into endless battles of boredom and restlessness? For some children, car rides are extra challenging.

Maybe your child has sensory processing disorder or is a sensory seeker and sitting still in a car is really hard for them.  If car rides are challenging for your child or family,, it’s time to unlock the power of sensory toys for making car rides into engaging and enjoyable experiences.

Hi! My name is Marra and I am a mama of a sweet toddler and a pediatric occupational therapist who has spent years working with children with different developmental needs and supporting their parents as they navigate the ups and downs of child development.

The majority of children I have worked with have some sensory challenges or sensory needs.  I love working with children to help them improve their sensory processing skills so that they can more easily participate in activities that are meaningful to them and their families.

For many of the children I have worked with, trips in the car are challenging. On a more personal note, I have spent many hours in the car with my toddler.  Whether it’s due to my living situation, love of travel, or even my love of road trips, my toddler has spent more hours in the car than most children her age.

Although she doesn’t currently have sensory processing challenges, like all of us, she does have sensory needs that must be met.  Providing her with sensory toys for car rides makes our trips so enjoyable.

Enhancing the calming effect of sensory toys for car rides

In addition to their ability to entertain and calm children during long car rides, sensory toys also have the remarkable power to stimulate the senses. This is so beneficial for all children  By engaging multiple sensory systems, these toys provide a rich and immersive experience that can captivate children’s attention and calm their bodies.

One of the primary ways in which sensory toys stimulate the senses is through their vibrant colors and engaging textures. Brightly colored toys catch the eye and can instantly capture a child’s interest, providing a visually stimulating experience that keeps them engaged and occupied. Similarly, toys with different textures offer a tactile sensation that can be both soothing and intriguing, allowing children to explore and engage with the toy through touch.

Furthermore, many sensory toys also incorporate sounds and movements that appeal to the auditory and proprioceptive senses. Toys that make sounds, such as squeaky toys or rattles, not only grab a child’s attention but also help to develop their auditory skills.

These toys allow children to associate specific sounds with certain actions, promoting their cognitive development and understanding of cause and effect. Additionally, toys that feature movement, such as spinning gears or rolling balls, provide a vestibular experience that encourages children to engage their motor skills and coordination.

Our bodies need a variety of sensory input throughout the day in order to maintain a calm happy state.  Children differ in the type of sensory input  and how much they need.  If you would like to learn more about sensory processing check out What is Sensory Processing.

For some children, especially those who are sensory seekers or have sensory processing disorder, it is really hard for them to get their sensory needs met while they are sitting in a car.  No wonder they don’t like the car rides.

By providing a multi-sensory experience, sensory toys not only entertain children during long car rides but also play a crucial role in providing them with the sensory input they need. As children interact with these toys, they are exposed to a variety of sensory stimuli that promote learning, curiosity, and exploration.

When choosing sensory toys for car rides, it’s important to consider the different sensory aspects they offer and to know what sensory input your child likes and doesn’t like. Look for toys that provide a range of colors, textures, sounds, and movements to engage multiple senses simultaneously.

This will ensure that the toys effectively capture and maintain your child’s attention throughout the journey, providing a calming and entertaining effect that supports their cognitive growth.

By incorporating sensory toys for car rides into your family’s travel adventures, you can transform long car rides into engaging and enjoyable experiences for both children and parents alike.

The stimulating effect of these toys goes beyond entertainment, fostering cognitive development and creating lasting memories on the road. So, pack a few sensory toys for your next journey and get ready to embark on a peaceful, fun-filled adventure with your little ones.

Choosing the right sensory toys for car rides

With this understanding, let us now explore how to choose the right sensory toys for your family’s car adventures. When selecting sensory toys for car rides, it’s important to consider a few key factors.

First and foremost, safety should be a top priority. Look for toys that are age appropriate, free of small parts that could pose a choking hazard, and made from non-toxic materials. Ensuring that the toys are safe will give you peace of mind and allow your child to play freely without worry.

Another factor to consider is the portability of the sensory toys. Since you’ll be using them during car rides, it’s essential that they are easy to pack and bring along. Look for toys that are lightweight and compact, making them convenient to store in your car or carry in a travel bag.

Additionally, consider toys that have built-in storage compartments or come with a carrying case, as this will help keep things organized and prevent items from getting lost.

Variety is also crucial when choosing sensory toys for long car rides. Children have different preferences and interests, so providing a range of options will keep them engaged and entertained throughout the journey. Children’s sensory needs vary day to day.

Look for toys that offer different sensory experiences such as textures, sounds, and visual stimulation. This could include toys with different shapes and textures to touch and manipulate, toys that make sounds or play music, or toys that have colorful lights or moving parts to capture their attention.  Below I’ve shared some of my favorite sensory toys for car rides.
