Hi! My name is Marra and I’m a mama and a pediatric occupational therapist who has years of experience working with children with different developmental needs and helping their parents navigate the ups and downs of child development.

My babies bedtime routine has always been one of my favorite parts of the day.  It’s full of love, snuggles, stories, hugs, kisses, and hopefully a sleeping baby at the end.

I’m sure many parents would disagree with me here.  For many parents, bedtime might be a stressful time for you and your baby, when you’re both exhausted and there’s pressure on both of you to sleep.

If this is you, I hope to help change your mindset around bedtime and make it a more peaceful loving experience for both you and baby.  This post is the all about the most effective bedtime routines for babies.

Understanding Attachment Theory and how it relates to bedtime routines.

Positive attachment, the important emotional bond between a baby and their primary caregivers, forms the cornerstone of healthy development.

When approached with sensitivity and responsiveness, bedtime routines become vital for nurturing this attachment. The consistency and comfort provided during these routines contribute significantly to a child’s sense of security and trust in their caregivers.

Babies need you in order to regulate their nervous system or to co-regulate.  This means that they need you to feel safe and to help calm down and relax when they are upset.

This is important to understand because babies and young children can only be as calm as you are.  If you are stressed, exhausted, or upset at bedtime, they won’t be able to relax and will have a difficult time falling asleep.

If you can guess, I am not a fan of sleep training before two and never a fan of the cry out method.  This doesn’t support healthy attachment and regulation.

So, when establishing an effective bedtime routine for babies, think about creating calm, relaxing experiences for both you and your baby.

As the sun begins its descent, transforming day into night, creating a calm environment for you and baby is an essential part of effective bedtime routine for babies..

Use the calming sensory experience that warm water has and add bedtime bath into your babies bedtime routine. The warmth of the water has a calming effect on your baby’s delicate senses, setting the stage for relaxation.

Choose mild, baby-friendly products to cleanse their tender skin, and maintain a consistent water temperature for added comfort. This shared experience not only fosters a clean slate for bedtime but also serves as a tactile opportunity for bonding and play.

Use Massage as a calming strategy

Unlock the benefits of touch by incorporating gentle massage into your bedtime routine. The use of a mild baby oil coupled with slow, rhythmic deep pressure strokes creates a sensory experience that promotes relaxation by activating the proprioceptive sensory system.
