Hi! My name is Marra and I’m a mama and a pediatric occupational therapist who has years of experience working with children with diverse developmental needs and helping their parents navigate the ups and downs of child development.

I loved being a support person for parents learning about child development, sensory processing, and their child’s individual needs.

I would often recommend to families toys or sensory equipment to help improve their child’s sensory processing and developmental skills. I’d like to share the most common recommendations with you.

This post is all about the top 25 educational toys for toddlers to stimulate learning, creativity, and problem-solving.  I know your little one will love these toys!

UNDERSTANDING SENSORY TOYS AND THEIR IMPORTANCE FOR AUTISM

I’ve developed expertise in early child development and selecting toys! I’ve always been intentional about choosing toys for my daughter that foster her love of learning.

When it comes to picking toys for my daughter or recommending them to others, I firmly believe that simplicity is key and less is more. I steer clear of toys that are battery-operated, light up, or make sounds.

The more a toy does, the less a child is encouraged to do. If a toy makes noise, it eliminates the child’s need to create sounds or engage in speech development.

Simple toys, on the other hand, inspire imagination and creative play. None of my daughter’s toys require batteries or play music, yet she’s been happily singing songs all week.

I favor toys that encourage movement. Children learn best when they’re physically active, and after the pandemic, it’s especially important for all kids to move more.

This is closely related to the development of their sensory systems. Children need physical movement just as much as they need food and water. If you want to dive deeper into sensory processing, check out my blog below.

I’m also a fan of toys that grow with the child and remain engaging over the years. It’s not practical to spend money on toys that only hold their interest for a few months.

Pretend play is ideal for this age, whether for boys or girls. Through pretend play, children develop skills like storytelling and problem-solving. I’ve also compiled a list of my favorite gift ideas for 2-year-olds below.
