The power of Sensory Play

The power of sensory play cannot be understated when it comes to a child’s learning and development. Through engaging their senses, children are able to explore and understand the world around them in a unique and meaningful way.

In the case of a magical Christmas sensory bin, sensory play takes on a whole new level of enchantment.

Sensory play is not only beneficial for children with sensory processing disorder or autism.  It’s so important that every child gets the opportunity to engage in different sensory experience including exploring a Christmas sensory bin.

How to Create a magical Christmas sensory bin

Sensory bin or table

The first step in building a magical sensory bin is to decide what it will be in.  There are a few options.  I really like to use this storage bin because it has a top and you can easily put the lid on and put in someplace out of the reach of the child.

This type of bin might be the most convenient option for those of you who have little ones who will require supervision.  Remember to keep safety your number one priority and that most sensory bins have some choking hazards.

This doesn’t mean little one’s can’t enjoy the benefits of a Christmas sensory bin.  It just means they need to be supervised during play.  This bin makes that possible.

I used this bin during my treatment sessions because it is easily portable and was easy to clean and re use for a different type of sensory bin.

I’m obsessed with this sensory table.  I absolutely think it’s a great option if your child loves playing in sensory bins all year round.  Plus it can also be a desk and if you flip the top over it’s a chalk board.

In the end the size and shape of the container you use for your magical Christmas sensory bin really doesn’t matter.  You can choose whatever works best for you and your child.

Let it snow in the Christmas sensory bin

So for the snow, you can use a variety of different textures and materials.  It’s your chance to be creative.  I’ve listed the products that I use. for snow in my Christmas sensory bin above.

I really like the texture of epson salt.  It is southing and so different then the types of textures we all interact with on most days.  I really like the eucalyptus and spearmint  epson salt because it smells like Christmas and is so relaxing.

As a warning the fragrance is really strong at first so make sure your child issn’t too sensitive to smells.  They also have fragrance free epson salt that will work great as well.  Smell is another fun sense to explore with children.

I love these reusable ice cubes.  If you leave them in the freezer over night and then through them into the sensory bin the next day they will make the snow cold.  There has been some recent research that colder temperatures can have a positive effect on sensory regulation.

Adding a variety of sensory materials to the sensory bin

When it comes to creating a magical Christmas sensory bin for your child, choosing the right materials is key. The materials you select will determine the overall sensory experience and the level of engagement your child will have.

So, let’s explore some important factors to consider when gathering the perfect materials for your sensory bin.

Consider the texture of the materials you’re including. Sensory bins are all about stimulating different senses, so it’s important to provide a variety of textures for your child to explore.

From soft and fluffy cotton balls to smooth and shiny ornaments, the possibilities are endless. Don’t be afraid to mix things up and include materials with different textures to captivate your child’s senses.

Safety should always be a top priority, especially when it comes to choosing materials for your child’s sensory bin. Keep in mind that some materials may pose choking hazards, so it’s crucial to choose age-appropriate items.

Avoid small pieces that could easily be swallowed and opt for larger, child-safe materials instead. Additionally, consider any potential allergens that your child may have and avoid using those in the sensory bin.

Lastly, be open to experimentation and creativity. While there are plenty of tried-and-true materials for sensory bins, don’t be afraid to think outside the box and include unexpected items.

By choosing the right materials, you’re setting the stage for a truly magical Christmas sensory bin. From considering the theme and texture to prioritizing safety and embracing creativity, your selection of materials will lay the foundation for an immersive sensory adventure.

A FINAL MAGICAL TOUCH TO YOUR CHRISTMAS SENSORY BIN

In addition to the visual elements, incorporating sensory textures can take your magical Christmas sensory bin to the next level. Consider including various materials that will engage your child’s sense of touch and create a more immersive experience.

One idea is to include some soft, fluffy cotton balls to mimic snow, allowing your child to feel the sensation of a winter wonderland right at their fingertips.

Another way to add touches of magic is to include objects with different textures. You could incorporate smooth glass gems, silky ribbons, or even fuzzy pom-poms that your child can explore and interact with.

These diverse textures will not only stimulate their sense of touch but also enhance their overall sensory experience.

Lastly, don’t forget to personalize the container to further enhance the magical experience. You can decorate it with festive ribbons, stickers, or even create a unique label that adds to the whimsical charm of the sensory bin. Encourage your child to be involved in this creative process, making it a special bonding activity for both of you.
